Yohimbine - Erectile Dysfunction

Yohimbine (YOH) is a popular herbal supplement typically used as a fat burner or performance enhancer, but it is also used as a herbal remedy for erectile dysfunction. YOH bark extract is an alkaloid derived from the African yohimbe tree. It's said to act as an aphrodisiac and it has been thought to promote sexual performance by helping men who suffer from ED (the yohimbine - erectile dysfunction linkage) and women with low sex drives. But how much of this is actually true and supported by scientific research?

Yohimbine - ED | Does it help?

What is true is that Yohimbine works as an alpha blocker, meaning it dilates blood vessels and increases blood flow generally in the body, including to the penis, which helps to improve erectile function. Which supports the yohimbine - ED linkage. However, if you already have a poor blood flow, it may not be able to overcome organic erectile dysfunction with this herbal Viagra. Although studies support YOH is a potent fat burner (but note that study subjects's body mass and muscle mass did not change) its potency in facilitating erectile dysfunction appears to be quite weak. Most physician won’t prescribe the medication form of the herb, Yohimbine hcl, as medication for treating erectile dysfunction, however the herbal form continues to be sold over the counter in the US.

Yohimbine - Erectile Dysfunction | Supplements

Although this supplement has been banned in many places around the world such as England, Australia, and Canada and despite very little to no evidence of its effectiveness in treating erectile dysfunction, it continues to be sold in the United States. Until this product is banned in USA, buyers should be aware that actual dose may not match the labeled dose of the supplements. Most of the supplements sold as YOH contain little to no actual supplement according to a study on quantities of yohimbine in supplements, only 4.1% of the 7 major over the counter supplements claiming to contain yohimbine actually contained an accurate amount of the herb as well as provide information on the many known negative side effects.

Yohimbine - Erectile Dysfunction | Side Effects

Significant adverse effects include headaches, hypertension, and panic attacks anxiety,  it adversely interacts with many medications, trigger manic psychosis or suicidal episodes in people with bipolar disorder. You should not take YOH if you have heart conditions, kidney issues, ulcers of the stomach or intestines, or a history of mental or mood disorders or if you are taking medicines for mental or mood problems.

Always talk to your doctor before taking any over the counter supplements.

A Men's Clinic near you may offer various treatment options for ED.  Our clinic specializes in restoring blood flow to the penile arteries.  Have you ever heard of someone getting a balloon angioplasty to reopen arteries in their heart?  Our physicians do the same procedure but in the much smaller penile arteries in the pelvis. These smaller blood vessels are prone to blocking sooner than larger arteries supplying the heart.  Safely removing the plaque formations can restore blood flow to the penis allowing a natural erection to occur.
