A penile prosthesis, penis implant, or penile implant were invented in the 1970’s as promising option for men suffering from erectile dysfunction as Viagra ® and other oral ED medications did not exist. They are available in two forms, either malleable (bendable) or inflatable. Implants typically make getting spontaneous erection impossible although patients report higher degree of satisfaction when compared to medications or other mechanical devices. Of 425 men in a British study of penis implants, most of whom had the malleable variety, 89% could have sexual intercourse, and 81% were satisfied with the implant results.

How do Penile Implants or Penile Prosthesis Work?

Penile prosthesis, penis implant, or a penile implant, are available in two forms, either malleable (bendable) semi-rigid rods (not inflatable) or inflatable cylinders. Penile surgery is required to insert these implants within corpora cavernosa (the two chambers that run the length of the penis and contain spongy tissue) of the penis. Penis implants typically make getting spontaneous erection impossible although patients report higher degree of satisfaction when compared to medications or other mechanical devices (such as vacuum pumps). These implants typically need repair and/or replacement within 10 years.
