Prescription drugs like Viagra, Cialis and Levitra may not be necessary to treat erectile dysfunction.  In fact, these drugs only work for 50-70% of men.  A study from Australian researchers and published in May 2014 in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, showed that men can reverse erectile dysfunction with simple lifestyle changes.  So what can we do to better our sexual performance?  Here are the top 5 immediate lifestyle changes for erectile dysfunction you can implement into your life.


  1. Make Exercise a Priority

There are many lifestyle changes for erectile dysfunction, but exercise is by far the most important.  Exercise improves blood flow, which is crucially important for an erection to occur.  Lifting weights also increases the natural production of testosterone, which is another factor to combat ED. 

Pelvis exercises have been found to be most helpful in treating erectile dysfunction.  A study from the University of the West in the U.K. found that pelvic exercises helped 40 percent of men with ED regain normal erectile function. They also helped an additional 33.5 percent significantly improve erectile function.


  1. Watch What You Eat

The foods you eat can have a direct impact on erectile dysfunction.  Try eating a diet rich in fruit, veggies, whole grains, and fish.  Cut down servings of red meat and refined grains.  This helps maintain a healthy body weight, which is important.  Men who have a 42-inch waist are 50 percent more likely to have ED than men with a 32-inch waist. Also, obesity increases the risk for vascular disease and diabetes, two main factors that contribute to ED. Hardening of the arteries causes plaque build up, restricting blood flow and hindering an erection.  Once buildup reaches a certain point, a balloon angioplasty or a more invasive implant procedure may be necessary.


  1. Monitor Your Sleep

Many men don’t realize that sleep is critical for testosterone levels. Most men need 8 to 10 hours per night.  Why?  Testosterone is made while you sleep.  The less sleep you get, the less testosterone you produce.   The less testosterone you produce, the ability to have sex decreases.  Also, be sure to get evaluated by a doctor if you snore or have sleep apnea as they could be affecting your sleep cycles. 

  1. Stop Smoking

Smoking and even smokeless tobacco can cause the narrowing of important blood vessels and arteries.   This can cause the blood supply to the penis to become restricted, making it difficult to achieve an erection. To perform your sexual performance, make it a priority to stop smoking right away. This is one of the very important lifestyle changes for erectile dysfunction. Some anti-smoking campaigns have even been successful with advertising this linkage, use it as the motivation you need to kick the habit!


  1. Avoid Heavy Alcohol

Alcohol is a depressant which could lead indirectly to temporary and long-term erectile dysfunction.  The central nervous system is responsible for releasing nitric oxide, an essential chemical for producing and maintaining an erection.  Heavy alcohol consumption depresses the central nervous system, causing it to function less efficiently. Not enough nitric oxide could then translate to erectile dysfunction.  Alcohol is also a lot of excess calories, cutting back may also help with your weight loss goals.


  6.  Stress

Learning to properly manage stress and anxiety can also help with erectile dysfunction.  Letting stress build up can negatively affect your overall health and sexual performance. Why? Stress leads to high blood pressure and/or high cholesterol, both of which contribute to erectile dysfunction.  Talk to a professional about ways to manage stress and anxiety.
